Stop. And feel the courage that defeated the dragon.
Deep beneath the Postojna region, where darkness reigns, mystery lingers, and water droplets slowly shape magnificent cave formations, once lived a dragon. It was enormous, fearsome, and always hungry. Whenever it emerged from the cave, its roar echoed across the land. The local people feared it so greatly that they left livestock behind to keep the beast satisfied and themselves safe. No one dared go near it; no one except Jacob.

Shepherd Jakob came from the village of Šmihel under Nanos. He had neither sword, nor armour, nor an army, but he possessed something far more valuable: intelligence, courage, and curiosity. He watched the dragon, thought carefully, and eventually came up with a plan.
According to the legend, Jacob prepared a trap. He hid quicklime inside a calf’s hide and left it for the dragon to find. Smelling easy prey, the dragon swallowed it without hesitation and soon afterwards gulped down water. That’s when it happened. A fierce reaction began inside the beast. It swelled larger and larger until, in the moment that is still told today, the dragon burst apart. Jakob defeated the mighty dragon not through strength, but through cleverness. The villagers are said to have made bags from the dragon’s skin, which is why, to this day, the people of the Postojna region are known as torbarji – the bag makers.
And if you listen carefully while exploring the cave, you might just hear the echo of this ancient tale… or perhaps it’s only the sound of dripping water. Who knows?
