A train full of visitors with a guide touring Postojna Cave, observing stalactites hanging from the ceiling and stalagmites rising from the ground.

Postojna Cave

Discovered in 1818 by local cave guide Luka Čeč, Postojna Cave is Europe’s most visited cave and Slovenia’s most popular tourist attraction. More than 40 million visitors from around the world have explored its extraordinary underground world. With 24 kilometres of passages, galleries, and magnificent chambers, it is one of the most diverse cave systems on the planet. During your visit, you’ll encounter the cave’s most famous stalagmite and meet its most celebrated resident, the mysterious olm, often called the “baby dragon”. Postojna Cave is also the only cave in the world with a double-track underground railway.

The guided tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and covers 5 kilometres of the cave, including 3.7 kilometres by the iconic cave train. As the temperature inside the cave remains between 8 and 10°C throughout the year, warm clothing is recommended. Guided tours are available in four languages, while audio guides are offered in seventeen.

The cave’s spectacular chambers also host one of its most famous events – the Living Nativity Scene, staged during the Christmas season. This live nativity performance held amidst the stalagmites and stalactites features more than 500 performers.

While visiting Postojna Cave Park, you can also explore the EXPO Cave Karst exhibition and the Proteus Cave with the Vivarium.

Beyond the cave itself, the park offers plenty to enjoy. Cross one of its picturesque bridges, have a snack and relax beside the river, browse unique local souvenirs, and savour excellent cuisine just steps from the cave entrance. There are countless reasons to visit, so be sure to check the opening hours before your trip.

We recommend travelling to Postojna Cave by public transport. If you’re already in Postojna, the most pleasant way to reach the cave is on foot via the riverside trail along the Pivka River.
