Stay safe in the hills of the Postojna region

In the Postojna region, trails quickly lead you through forests, along scenic ridges, and into places where the world feels just a little more extraordinary. But that’s exactly why they deserve your respect. Most routes are not particularly demanding, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t prepare. If you want to come home with nothing but great memories, take a few moments to plan before you set off.

CHECK THE WEATHER FIRST

In the hills, everything begins – and sometimes ends – with the weather. If rain, snow, or strong winds are in the forecast, it’s better to stay in the valley. The hills will still be there tomorrow. On fine days, set off early, as afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer. And one more thing: the bora wind is part of everyday life in the Postojna region. Always pack an extra warm layer and a hat.

CHOOSE A TRAIL THAT SUITS YOU

You don’t have to go far to enjoy spectacular views. The Postojna region is full of easily accessible peaks, perfect for exploring. Choose a trail that matches your fitness level and set a pace that suits the slowest person in your group. If you’re hiking with children, remember that the journey itself is part of the adventure, so allow plenty of time to enjoy it.

DON’T TAKE SHORTCUTS, FOLLOW THE TRAIL MARKERS

The best trails are already marked. Use a map, whether printed or digital, and follow the red circle with a white centre which will guide you safely through the landscape. Before setting off, check whether the mountain huts are open, and avoid closed trails or unmarked shortcuts. If something goes wrong, help is always within reach. The emergency number is 112.

The photograph shows a group of people walking along a wide gravel forest path on a sunny day. The hikers, including adults and a small child, are walking away from the camera, surrounded by dense green trees and vegetation. In the foreground, a red and white hiking trail marker is visible on a tree, indicating a marked walking route through the forest. The scene conveys a peaceful atmosphere and the enjoyment of spending time outdoors in nature.

THE RIGHT GEAR MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE

Good boots make for a good hike. Choose sturdy footwear with good grip and ankle support. Pack spare clothing, protection from the wind and sun, plenty of water, and a few snacks.
Hiking poles, a basic first-aid kit, and a torch are also useful, just in case you happen to come across one of the region’s many caves.

Once you’re ready, there’s only one thing left to do: set off. In the Postojna region, trails don’t really end. They simply connect. And every step might take you a little farther than you expected.

Enjoy the journey.
