1. On foot

From Postojna Railway Station, it’s about 2 km to Postojna Cave, a walk of approximately 30 minutes. From Postojna Bus Station, the distance is around 1.5 km, which takes about 20 minutes on foot.

2. By bike

Cycling from either the railway or bus station to Postojna Cave takes just a few minutes. If you don’t have your own bike, you can rent one through the POSbikes bike-rental system. One of the rental stations is located at Postojna Cave Park.

3. By Furman town bus – ROUTE 2 (download PDF)

The Furman town bus is free of charge and operates throughout the year, from Monday to Saturday. Route 2 serves Postojna Cave. If you’re arriving by train, you can board the bus directly outside the railway station. Get off at the Park Jama stop for Postojna Cave. The journey takes approximately 20 minutes.

If you’re arriving in Postojna by bus, simply walk from the bus station to the Visitor Centre (TIC), where you’ll find the Knjižnica bus stop served by Route 2. From there, the Furman town bus will take you to Postojna Cave. Get off at the Park Jama or Postojna Cave – roadside stop.

4. By shuttle bus

During the main tourist season (from 24 June to 1 September) and on selected public holidays, a shuttle bus connects the town of Postojna with Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle. The return fare between Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle is €2.

5. By taxi

A taxi will take you directly to the entrance of the cave in just a few minutes. Taxi providers:

Hidden beneath a towering karst cliff, Predjama Castle lies just a few kilometres from Postojna Cave and the town of Postojna. During the main tourist season (from 24 June to 1 September) and on selected public holidays, a shuttle bus connects Postojna, Postojna Cave, and Predjama Castle. The return fare between Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle is €2.

Unfortunately, there are no other public transport services to Predjama Castle.

1. Car parks in the town centre

Larger free car parks in the town centre include:

• PTC Primorka Car Park
• Health Centre Car Park
• Cemetery Car Park
• Barracks Car Park

When parking in the town centre, please pay attention to the parking signs and time limits. In the designated Blue Zone, parking is free for the first hour only. You can also park in the Hotel Kras underground car park, where the first hour is also free of charge.

2. Car parks at tourist attractions

Paid parking is available at the designated car parks near Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle. Parking at most other tourist attractions is free of charge. Please park only in marked parking spaces.

Tip: During the high season, access to Predjama Castle and parking nearby can be challenging due to the large number of visitors. We recommend using the seasonal shuttle bus during the summer months for a more relaxed and environmentally friendly journey.

If you’re travelling to the Postojna region by motorhome, you can use one of the designated motorhome parking areas:

• PZA Postojnska jama

For longer stays, we recommend choosing one of the local campsites, allowing you to explore the region’s stories and natural wonders at a relaxed pace.

Nature here can easily give you a sense of freedom, but wild camping is prohibited in Slovenia. This applies to tents, motorhomes, camper vans, and cars, as well as forests, meadows, riverbanks, lakeshores, and most parking areas.

You can legally stay overnight at official campsites and designated motorhome stopover areas. By doing so, you help keep the Postojna region authentic, peaceful, and wonderful for everyone who stops here.

The town of Postojna is served by POSbikes, a bike-sharing system offering bicycles suitable for getting around town.

Bikes are also available to rent from several private providers.

Yes. Luggage storage is available at the Visitor Centre during opening hours. It is also available at some tourist attractions (such as Postojna Cave) and, by prior arrangement, at certain accommodation providers.

The picturesque village of Planina, home to the beautiful Planina Cave, lies about 15 km from Postojna. You can reach Planina by bus from Postojna. Before you travel, check the timetable and select Postojna as your departure stop and Planina pri Rakeku as your destination.

The Planina bus stop is approximately 1 km from the cave. After getting off the bus, it’s just a short walk to the entrance.

Yes. There are currently three public electric vehicle charging stations in Postojna, offering a total of six charging points.

Each charging station includes:

• a Type 2 connector for faster charging (up to 44 kW)
• a Schuko socket for slower charging

Charging station locations:

• CTM Postojna car park (Tržaška cesta 59a) – one charging station with two charging points
• Post Office car park – two charging stations with four charging points
• Hotel Kras parking garage – charging is available in the garage (paid)

Electric vehicle charging stations are also available at the Postojna Cave Park car park.

Duration of the visit

A visit to Postojna Cave takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

The tour includes a ride on the famous cave train followed by a guided walk through the spectacular underground chambers.

Tip: The temperature inside the cave remains around 10°C throughout the year, so we recommend bringing an extra jumper or light jacket, especially during the summer months.

Tickets

You can purchase your tickets online in advance or at the Postojna Cave ticket office on the day of your visit.

We strongly recommend booking in advance, particularly during the summer season, to secure your preferred time slot and avoid waiting.

You can enjoy traditional Slovenian cuisine at several inns and restaurants across the Postojna region, where staff will be happy to recommend local specialities. We recommend Čuk Restaurant, Pira Restaurant, Štorja Bistro and Hruševje Inn.

Traditional dishes are also served at both mountain huts, Mladika Hut on Pečna Reber and Vojko Hut on the Nanos Plateau. Before your visit, we recommend checking that the hut is open.

Guests staying at Hudičevec Ecotourism Farm and Smrekar Homestead can also enjoy locally prepared food, while non-residents may be able to dine there by prior arrangement.

If you’re visiting Postojna, don’t miss a stop at Siesta Café, where you can try one of the town’s signature desserts – the Jakob Cake, made with locally sourced ingredients.

The Via Dinarica trail enters the Postojna region at Razdrto, beneath the Nanos Plateau, and continues through the region towards Cerknica before crossing into Croatia. The Slovenian section of the trail is shown in more detail here, where you’ll also find a detailed route map and GPX track.

The Postojna region is the perfect base for exploring the Green Karst and the rest of Slovenia. To visit its main attractions, you’ll need at least two days, but we encourage you to stay a little longer. That way, you’ll have time to discover the wonders of the karst, the stories of the knight Erasmus, the legendary barber, and the shepherd boy Jakob, who defeated the dragon.

Take your time and stop awhile in the Postojna region. Every corner hides a story, and every step reveals a new wonder.

For visitors with reduced mobility:

Postojna Cave is partially accessible for visitors with reduced mobility. Most of the route is accessible, and part of the tour is by the famous cave train. The walking section includes a few steeper parts, where assistance from a companion is required. Predjama Castle is not wheelchair accessible due to its many stairs and narrow passageways. For families with strollers:

Postojna Cave can be visited with a stroller. The paths and ramps are adapted, and a foldable stroller may also be taken on the cave train. Predjama Castle is not accessible with a stroller.

Pets are not allowed inside Postojna Cave, Predjama Castle, or other indoor attractions within Postojna Cave Park. They are, however, welcome in the outdoor areas of the park.

If you are visiting with a dog, dog kennels are available while you are on the tour. We recommend checking their availability with the park before your visit.
