But instead of taking the classic tour, we explored the surrounding countryside and set off on a short walk through the villages nestled below the Nanos Plateau. The children searched for hidden passages among the rocks, while we soaked up the picture-perfect views.

When our stomachs started to rumble, we headed back towards town, with tradition on our minds. You can’t say you’ve truly experienced the Postojna region without trying Jacob Cake. Next, we visited the Notranjska Museum. If you’re looking for a real wow factor for children, this is it. The interactive exhibits about the karst are so engaging and well presented that they hardly notice how much they’re learning.

But the real surprise came at Neotropica. I’ll admit, it sounds a little unusual at first: a tropical paradise in the heart of the Notranjska region? Yet the moment you step inside among the exotic animals, you realise it’s exactly the unexpected experience you were hoping for. Watching the children gaze in amazement at the colourful world of wildlife was priceless. Strange? Maybe. Wonderful? Without a doubt.
