Erasmus of Predjama

Back when knights still rode across the land of Carniola, a castle unlike any other stood beneath a mighty cliff. Predjama Castle, built high into the rock cliff, appears extraordinary and unconquerable at first sight. It is linked to the story of a knight who continues to capture the imagination to this day – Erasmus of Predjama.

The illustration portrays Erasmus of Predjama, the legendary knight associated with Predjama Castle. He is shown with long red hair and a fur cloak, surrounded by a wreath of red leaves and symbolic elements. At the centre of his chest is a depiction of Predjama Castle built into the cliff, while a coat of arms, dragon, cherries and an anatomical heart reference his story, family heritage and the legends connected with him.

The stories describe him as a brave, proud, and fiercely independent man. They say he stood up to those more powerful than himself and never shied away from taking risks. His path is said to have led him to the imperial court, where he earned a reputation as a skilled warrior, before becoming embroiled in a conflict that turned him into an outlaw.

He sought refuge in his castle, where the rock itself offered protection. Hidden within the cliff were secrets invisible at first glance. Legend speaks of concealed passageways through which supplies reached the castle, allowing Erasmus to defy those determined to capture him.

While the soldiers waited below, hoping he would eventually run out of food, life inside the castle carried on. According to legend, Erasmus even mocked his enemies by throwing fresh fruit down at them, a clear sign that he wanted nothing.

But the siege did not end. In the end, it was betrayal that decided his fate. One of his servants revealed the moment when Erasmus was at his most vulnerable. As he retreated to the privy on the outer side of the castle, the servant gave the signal. A cannon was fired, striking that very part of the castle.
And so ended the story of a knight who was defeated not by towering walls or a long siege, but by a single moment of betrayal.

Today, Erasmus of Predjama remains an enduring part of a place where history, legend, and imagination intertwine. His story still echoes within the walls of Predjama Castle.
