Planina Cave is one of Slovenia’s most important and beautiful water-filled karst caves. Located on the edge of the Planina Polje, it is best known for its remarkable natural phenomenon – the underground confluence of the Pivka and Rak rivers, which join inside the cave to form the Unica River. This is one of the largest and most impressive underground river confluences in Europe.
The cave forms part of the extensive Postojna–Planina cave system and plays a key role in understanding the hydrology of the karst landscape. Visitors are captivated by its vast underground chambers, subterranean river, impressive speleothems, and rich cave fauna, including the famous olm.
Visits to Planina Cave are possible only with a guide. The standard guided tour follows a well-maintained 500-metre route leading to the underground confluence of the rivers and lasts approximately one hour. As the temperature inside the cave remains around 10°C throughout the year, warm clothing and suitable footwear are recommended. Visitors must also carry a torch, which you may bring yourself or borrow from your guide.
For those looking for an even more memorable experience, a unique boat tour offers the chance to explore the cave’s deeper and less accessible sections.
All tours are subject to suitable conditions and must be booked in advance.
