The Castle Cycling Route is a diverse circular trail that takes you back to the Middle Ages, when knights fought for the favour of their chosen ladies. The route begins at the Sustainable Mobility Centre in Postojna and follows Tržaška Street to Tito Square. The square lies just below Sovič Hill, where the ruins of Postojna Castle (Adelsberg) can still be seen. From the square, turn onto Ljubljanska Street and then, at Hotel Center, continue onto Kolodvorska Street, passing the Notranjska Museum. Follow the road straight ahead, cross the motorway via the bridge, and continue through Stara vas and across open meadows. A gravel road leads to the main road, which should be crossed with caution. The route then continues through the village of Grobišče before reaching the first castle on the trail: Prestranek Castle, renowned for its rich equestrian heritage. The journey then continues towards Orehek, home to Orehek Castle, the second castle along the route.
The first longer climb is followed by a descent through the villages of Rakulik and Sajevče to Hruševje. Through an underpass, you will cross the motorway once again and continue to the village of Dilce, where the route turns towards Landol and then towards Šmihel under Nanos. After a short climb, you will arrive in Predjama, home to the . Several places nearby offer food and drinks and a chance to rest. The route then continues along a particularly scenic and varied section through Bukovje, Belsko, Studeno, and Lohača to Planina. From a world-famous Predjama Castle distance, you will already spot Ravbar Tower, the only surviving remnant of the former Small Castle of Planina. Skirting the edge of the Planina Polje, you will then reach the ruins of the once-magnificent Baroque Haasberg Castle (Hošperk).
The final section of the Castle Cycling Route includes another climb which takes you past the Unec Collapse Valley (Unška koliševka). At Ravbarkomanda, the route rejoins Ljubljanska Road, which leads back to Postojna.
Praktične informacije
Several parking spaces are available in front of the Sustainable Mobility Centre, along with an electric vehicle charging station and a motorhome stopover area. During opening hours, the Centre also provides basic bicycle repair services.
Six pump tracks have been installed along the Castle Cycling Route, offering cyclists the opportunity to test their skills on rolling terrain, as well as five self-service bicycle repair stations.
The route is complemented by a wide range of cyclist-friendly restaurants, cafés, and accommodation providers, where you can enjoy a meal, take a break, and recharge for your next cycling adventure.
