The route takes you beneath Veliki Javornik (1,268 m), the most prominent peak of the Javorniki Hills. The Javorniki Hills form the largest part of Slovenia’s Dinaric Karst and are almost entirely covered by forest. Starting in Postojna, the route passes the Notranjska Museum before heading towards Javorniki. You’ll cross the railroad tracks and the highway, and then a long climb through the forest awaits you, leading to the summit, which is more gentle. Along the way, you will cycle through a variety of forest habitats and enjoy the peace and quiet beneath the canopy of towering trees. With a bit of luck, you may even spot some of the wildlife that calls these forests home, including roe deer, red deer, wild boar, and even bears.
Extra caution is advised on the descent, as some sections are steeper and will appeal to those who enjoy a more adrenaline-fuelled ride. The route is not waymarked, so we recommend bringing a navigation device or map, as there are numerous junctions and roads in the forest. The return journey leads back to Postojna via Ravbarkomanda, crossing the motorway a couple of times before following Ljubljanska Street back into the town centre.
Several parking spaces are available in front of the Sustainable Mobility Centre, along with an electric vehicle charging station and a motorhome stopover area. During opening hours, the Centre also provides basic bicycle repair services.
You can extend the route to Mladika Hut, where food and drinks are available on weekends.
The route is also an excellent choice during the summer months, as most of it remains in the shade of the forest.
