Church of St Stephen

Standing in the heart of Postojna, the Church of St Stephen is the town’s main parish church and an important landmark that reflects both its religious life and cultural heritage. The church was built in the 18^th century, as documented in historical records from the period when Postojna was developing around its main town square. Its bell tower and façade reflect the architectural style of the time, while the interior is enriched with fine sacred furnishings and artworks added over the centuries. The church is dedicated to St Stephen, the patron saint of horses, reflecting the vital role these animals once played in the local economy during the heyday of horse-drawn trade and transport.

On the exterior of the church, visitors can see the memorial plaque of the Nicoletti family, owners of the nearby Mülhofen Manor (today’s Kutin House) from the 17^th century onwards. In addition to the manor, the family owned much of the land stretching across the southern and western slopes of Sovič Hill, between the Church of St Stephen and the present-day entrance to Postojna Cave. The Nicoletti family played a significant role in the development of Postojna. Thanks to their patronage, the town received its first permanent priest in 1645, and through their efforts, the famous Lipica Stud Farm established a branch stud in the nearby village of Prestranek.
