Planina Polje

Planina Polje is one of the most distinctive and picturesque landscapes in the Postojna region – a place where water shapes both the scenery and the rhythm of nature. (A polje is a large, flat-floored depression found in karst regions, characterized by steep enclosing walls and internal drainage.) During dry periods, the polje is a patchwork of meadows, fields, and the meandering course of the Unica River. After heavy rainfall or spring snowmelt, however, it transforms into a vast intermittent lake. The Unica emerges from Planina Cave, winds its way across the plain, and then disappears once again into the karst underground. This constant interplay between surface and underground water gives Planina Polje its unique character and makes it one of Slovenia’s finest examples of a karst landscape.

Planina Polje is also an area of outstanding ecological importance. As part of the Natura 2000 network, it provides habitat for a rich variety of plant and animal species. Particularly notable are its floodplain meadows, rare plant communities, and bird species that depend on traditional land management and the area’s natural water regime.

Several important cultural landmarks can be found along the edge of the polje. Ravbar Tower stands as a reminder of the medieval control of important trade routes, while nearby Planina cave is one of Slovenia’s largest water caves. Together with the remains of the once-grand Haasberg Castle estate, these landmarks tell the story of centuries of coexistence between people and the karst environment.

Today, Planina Polje is a popular destination for walking, cycling, birdwatching, fishing, and peaceful moments in nature. It offers visitors a landscape of tranquillity, sweeping views, and ever-changing scenery that transforms with the seasons.
