Church of St Lawrence above Studeno

The Church of St Lawrence stands in a picturesque setting just below the summit of Gora, also known as Sveti Lovrenc (1,019 m), above the village of Studeno. It is one of the oldest sacred sites in the Postojna region. A branch church of the Parish of Studeno, it was first mentioned in historical records in 1391. Its Romanesque core has been preserved, while characteristic features of Istrian architecture can still be seen in its unrendered stone walls and robust stone window frames. The church’s simple yet harmonious design is complemented by a traditional stone bell gable dating from the 17^th century.

The focal point of the interior is a Neo-Renaissance wooden altar dedicated to St Lawrence, dating from 1901, which also includes statues of the Virgin Mary and Jesus donated by a local resident.

Today, the Church of St Lawrence is not only a place of worship but also a popular pilgrimage destination and hiking stop. Several marked trails lead to the church, rewarding visitors with beautiful panoramic views over the Postojna region and Cerknica and offering an excellent opportunity to enjoy the surrounding nature.

Did You Know? The church is dedicated to St Lawrence, the patron saint of the poor. He is traditionally invoked for protection against burns, fever, back pain, fires, and for a good harvest. His feast day is celebrated on 10 August, when the annual Perseid meteor shower is often visible in the night sky. In many countries, the meteors are traditionally known as the Tears of St Lawrence.
