A brown bear sits in a meadow surrounded by lush green forest, calmly observing its surroundings. Tall grass, wildflowers, and dense shrubs frame the scene.

Bear Watching

As evening falls over the Postojna region, venture into the forests that are home to the brown bear, the largest wild animal in Slovenia. Accompanied by an experienced local guide and forest ranger, you’ll learn about the lives of these remarkable animals and the secrets of Slovenia’s forests before settling into a specially designed hide to observe wildlife in its natural habitat.

The experience lasts 3–4 hours and is suitable for adults and children aged 8 and over. Your guide will collect you from your accommodation in Postojna or the surrounding area approximately two hours before sunset. After a 30-minute drive to the forest hide, you’ll wait quietly for the chance to observe foxes, badgers, and brown bears.

Throughout the experience, your guide will share insights into bear biology, and forest ecology in Slovenia. You will return safely to Postojna around one to two hours after sunset.

The experience is organised by Be Around Me, a certified “Bear-Friendly” provider that follows strict guidelines for responsible bear watching. Responsible bear watching in Slovenia means observing wild brown bears in their natural habitat while prioritising animal welfare, visitor safety, and minimal disturbance to wildlife and the surrounding environment. Slovenia is home to a stable brown bear population of around 900 individuals, and bear-watching activities are carefully regulated to ensure they remain sustainable. All tours are led by licensed guides with extensive knowledge of bear behaviour and safety procedures.

To minimise disturbance to wildlife, group sizes are intentionally kept small, with 2 to 8 participants.

Bear sightings cannot be guaranteed, as wild animals are unpredictable.
