If you begin in Šmihel, set off from the sculpture of the brave shepherd Jacob, who, according to local legend, saved the people of Postojna from the fearsome dragon of Postojna Cave. Follow the village’s main road. As the gentle climb begins, you’ll soon see the Church of St Michael. On the left stands an old stone watering trough once used for livestock, while on the right you’ll find a rest area with drinking water.
Turn onto the wide gravel track and continue past meadows into the forest until the world’s largest cave castle comes into view, built into a towering cliff – the Predjama Castle. Take time to explore it and visit the old linden tree beneath which, according to legend, the robber knight Erasmus of Predjama is buried.
Continue on toward the village of Landol and go past the old tollhouse, where carters used to pay tolls. The old village scales which the locals used to weigh their crops and livestock still stand there today. Return to the starting point by the sculpture of the shepherd boy Jacob.
