Haasberg Castle

The ruins of Haasberg Castle (Grad Hošperk), a magnificent Baroque manor overlooking the Unica River gorge on the southern edge of the Planina Polje, offer a fascinating glimpse into the grandeur of Slovenia’s aristocratic past. Built in the early 17th century by the Princes of Eggenberg, the estate was once renowned for its lavish interiors and beautifully landscaped park. In the 19th century, it was acquired by the Windischgrätz family, its last owners, before being destroyed by fire during the Second World War. Although only its ruins remain today, Haasberg Castle continues to impress with its architecture and magnificent views across the Planina Polje.

Across the road from the castle, you can also explore the former castle stable and its enclosed grassy courtyard, now used as an event venue. The stable houses a small ethnographic collection featuring artefacts discovered on the estate.

A short walk from Haasberg Castle lies a small natural area known as “The Gnomes’ Land” due to its charming diversity. After periods of heavy rainfall, numerous small karst springs emerge across the hillside. Together with water flowing from Lake Cerknica through the nearby Škratovka Cave, they feed a seasonal stream that winds through lush vegetation before joining the Unica River.

You can visit and explore the castle ruins independently and free of charge.
