Continue exploring the Postojna region.
The Great Krpan Trail is a circular trail that follows in the footsteps of Martin Krpan. We recommend starting in Pivka, from where the trail leads through the Pivka Valley, across the forests of the Javorniki Hills, and through the Lož Valley to the Bloke Plateau. It then continues past Slivnica and Lake Cerknica before reaching Rakov Škocjan. This is followed by an ascent via Kalič to Postojna and a return trip through the valley back to Pivka.
Along the trail, cyclists will encounter places that have played an important role in both distant and more recent history, as well as numerous churches, cultural monuments with rich interiors, castle ruins, and preserved manor houses. You will also get a close-up look at a variety of karst landforms: springs and sinkholes, a disappearing lake, caves and dolines, and characteristic ecosystems.
Experienced recreational cyclists can complete the route in a single day, although it can just as easily be divided into shorter stages. The trail is designed to accommodate hikers and horse riders as well, and most sections are also accessible by other means of transport.
The route was originally created as a hiking trail and is marked as such in real life. On four sections, alternative routes have been provided specifically for cyclists. On a Great Krpan Route map you can find both the hiking and cycling routes, QR codes for GPS tracks, and two suggested route extensions.
More information about the trail can be found on the map.
The best time to explore the trail is from April to October.
Accommodation options are limited on certain sections of the trail, so we recommend planning your journey carefully and booking overnight stays in advance.
There are seven checkpoint locations along the route where cyclists can collect stamps.
